Dutch spices trivia

The early history of speculaas kruiden dates back to the Roman empire, they were already familiar with 5 of the 9 spices. The romans spread all over Europe and brought these spices with them. When the Dutch East Indies spice trade started, more spices came available with lower prices. More bakers started making speculaas and blending their own spices, to give their speculaas there own unique taste.
Just like those bakers, we blend our own spices to give you that unique flavour.

Speculaas was made in the television show: The Great British Bake Off!

Tip: our recipe calls for buttermilk. If you can’t find buttermilk, you can make you own by adding 2 tabelspoons of lemon juice to 1 cup of UHT milk. Let sit for a few minutes and your buttermilk is ready!
